Website Review #2

Channel One News

I thought that ChannelOne had to be paid for by the school in order to use it, but they have a webpage of free resources.

1.       What age level student should use it?

o   Definitely high school, and possibly middle school.

2.       Is this a site that could be used in school? If so, how?

o   Yes.  This site would be great to explore a number of topics.  You could give the students an assignment as loose as: learn about something interesting and then tell the class about it.  It would give them plenty of material to read about, then they could practice their oral presentation skills.

o   I was first drawn to the channelone page, and then to family trees.  You are given a free family tree template, then you click through pictures and 1-2 paragraphs of information.  Have information in short sections makes the reading process less intimidating for students.  What might have been a whole page of reading, is divided up into 8 slides of information.  After you read the general information, you can click on other links: a video about Ellis Island & Michelle Obama’s family tree.

o   That’s a Law: I learned that it’s against the law for: idiots to vote in New Mexico; to cage a pregnant pick in Florida;  for grocers to give out plastic bags in San Francisco, California; for bingo games to exceed 5 hours in length in North Carolina, for electronic games to be played in public places in Greece (this one is for you, Sterg!); to place tacks on the highway in Tennessee;

o   Texting and Driving Ban: I watched a 2 min. video about texting while driving.  I saw a horrific image of the collision of a school bus and transfer truck caused by a 19 year-old who sent and received 11 texts in 11 minutes.  I also learned that Summerset County, New Jersey has a Driving While Distracted Law.  The first offense requires you to watch an video about the dangers of texting and driving and then take a test.  The alternative to watching the video is to pay $100.  The video has family members of people who were killed in a driving accident holding up a cell phone with a text message that was sent or being typed during the time of the accident.

3.       Are there any content area connections?

o   I saw connections to social studies, math, science, English…

4.       How interactive is the site?

o   Extremely interactive.  There are videos to watch, games to play (some of them cost money to buy the game :(…like eating your way to the top of the food chain) but you can play a game that lets you try to drive while distracted for free....  There are numerous articles to read...the student can point and click their way through all kinds of information.

5.       How commercial is the site?

o   Not very commerical, but while I was reading about how to make a family tree, an ad for Ancestry.com came up at the bottom of the page, but it was not very noticeable.

o   There was a more obvious ad for the Army when I was in the Games section.  It was a video and loud.

6.       Pros about the website?

o   It’s free!

o   Very Informative!

o   Multiple Topics!

o   Also has “fun” stuff…like horoscopes, music, sports, etc…

o   Has social/self-help stuff too…like “Are You Feeling Bullied?”

7.       Cons about the website?

o   Some ads that don’t look like ads.

o   This site has so much on it…I keep finding additional topics.  This is a good thing, but some students might feel overwhelmed at first.

o   This isn’t really a “con,” but be aware that students need earphones/earbuds while on this site.  There are plenty of informational videos to watch, and I would hate to ear that teachers had a rule that students couldn’t watch videos…

8.       Does it require you to sign up?

o   No! :D

9.       Is adult supervision required?

o   No.  This is made for students!  I didn’t see any inappropriate content.

  1. This site sounds amazing with all the different content areas it reaches and how interactive it is. I tried to click on the site but it did not work :-( The different educational aspects to the site that you mentioned seem like they would be beneficial in a classroom and that students could learn a lot!

  2. I think this site could be really beneficial for a classroom of any age. I like that it covered a variety of different topics. I also enjoyed that it is eye-catching for the students. Students are drawn to color and pages that attract the eye. If a website can do that, and present useful information, then it would be a great resource for a classroom.

  3. The link works for me... Could you try copying and pasting it into you web browser?

  4. It's kind of like a mix of a newspaper, US magazine, and VH1. I think there are lots of reading opportunities here, and I like that current events are covered. The games were things you would have to sign up for, and I did learn some new things taking the karate quiz.

There seems to be some junk news on here, too, like about Burger King's new summer treat, the Bacon Sundae (not a joke). I know it is news but it is also almost like a commercial for the product. The Army ads are a little disturbing to me as well, but I guess they have to recruit, yes?

I had no idea this website existed, nor that I could get in trouble for playing electronic games in public in Greece or for putting tacks on the road here in TN, so thanks for sharing!

Also, the link worked just fine for me. Just so you know...

  5. I like this site and can remember watching Channel one in middle school in homeroom. I think the site is great. It is almost like a news site with very relateable content. It could be a great classroom tool and provides a lot of great sources.

  6. I am a little "iffy" on this site. If you click on the navigational links at the bottom of the page ("Celeb Video" and "Teen Celebrity"), you are redirected to other web sites that are not so educational anymore. For example, by clicking on "Celeb Video", I was able to read an article on Teen.com listing five reasons why Miley Cyrus is ready for marriage. Hmmm... Did you know that Miley can never do better than Liam Hemsworth? "Let’s srsly hope she realized that Liam Hemsworth is maybe/possibly/definitely the hottest guy on Earth. Factor in his sick acting skills, insane body and uh-dorable accent and really Miley, how could you ever hope to top the star from The Hunger Games? Pfft. As if." Yes, the ChannelOne site took me to this.

  7. I never knew this existed... Thank you for sharing! I think I might like this site. Seems easy to navigate and comprehensible enough. Search works well (that is the first thing I check on these websites). I would probably be able to use it as another resource of videos for my kids. Yet for most of them, the speed of presenting will probably be way too fast.

  8. Ann, I feel like the Channel One site taking you, or our students, to Teen.com and all that is kind of like the whole Baby biography that we looked at in the last chapter. I mean, to me that excert DOES sound like ignorant-teenage-chatter, as it probably does to you. But at least they are reading something they are interested in? ...and being exposed to writing that is in a sort of dialect? What do you think?
